Vivekachudamani 1.334

1.334 Guru to Disciple

bāhyānusandhiḥ parivardhayetphalaṃ | durvāsanāmeva tatastato'dhikām | jñātvā vivekaiḥ parihṛtya bāhyaṃ | svātmānusandhiṃ vidadhīta nityam ||

Dwelling on outer things only increases its fruit, bad tendencies, more and more. Knowing this through discernment, set aside the outer and keep always to contemplation of your own Self.

Constant outward focus, comparison, news, wanting, feeds restlessness. Regularly turning inward steadies the mind.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, says dwelling on outer things only increases bad tendencies; knowing this, one should set aside the outer and always dwell on the Self.
