Vivekachudamani 1.336

1.336 Guru to Disciple

kaḥ paṇḍitaḥ sansadasadvivekī | śrutipramāṇaḥ paramārthadarśī | jānanhi kuryādasato'valambaṃ | svapātahetoḥ śiśuvanmumukṣuḥ ||

What learned person who discerns the real from the unreal, takes scripture as his authority, sees the highest truth and seeks liberation, would knowingly cling, like a child, to the unreal that causes his own fall?

Meaning today and context

We often know what harms us and still reach for it, like a child grabbing a hot thing. Real understanding shows in letting go, not only in knowing.

The guru, in the Vivekachudamani attributed to Shankaracharya, asks rhetorically what wise, discerning seeker would knowingly cling to the unreal, the cause of his own fall, like a child.
