Vivekachudamani 1.34

1.34 Shankaracharya

tamārādhya guruṃ bhaktyā prahvapraśrayasevanaiḥ | prasannaṃ tamanuprāpya pṛcchejjñātavyamātmanaḥ ||

Honouring that guru with devotion, with humble bowing, respect and service, and having won his goodwill, one should ask what one needs to know about the Self.

Respect for a teacher is never a duty to obey someone who demands money, control, secrecy or anything that harms you. A true teacher, as verse 33 says, is free of desire.
