Vivekachudamani 1.344

1.344 Guru to Disciple

vikṣepaśaktivijayo viṣamo vidhātuṃ | niḥśeṣamāvaraṇaśaktinivṛttyabhāve | dṛgdṛśyayoḥ sphuṭapayojalavadvibhāge | naśyettadāvaraṇamātmani ca svabhāvāt | niḥsaṃśayena bhavati pratibandhaśūnyo | vikṣepaṇaṃ nahi tadā yadi cenmṛṣārthe ||

Victory over the projecting power is hard to achieve while the veiling power has not been wholly removed. When seer and seen are clearly separated, like milk from water, that veil over the Self falls away of itself. Then, beyond doubt, one is free of obstruction, and there is no more projection, provided one does not turn again to unreal objects.

Meaning today and context

Fighting restless thoughts directly rarely works; what helps is clearly seeing that you are the one who watches them, not the thoughts themselves. Then the agitation has less to hold on to.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says the projecting power is hard to conquer unless the veiling power is wholly removed; once seer and seen are separated like milk and water, the veil falls by itself.
