Vivekachudamani 1.356

1.356 Guru to Disciple

samāhitā ye pravilāpya bāhyaṃ | śrotrādi cetaḥ svamahaṃ cidātmani | ta eva muktā bhavapāśabandhaiḥ | nānye tu pārokṣyakathābhidhāyinaḥ ||

Those who, absorbed in samadhi, dissolve the outer world, the senses such as hearing, the mind and their own ego into the conscious Self, they alone are free of the bonds of the noose of worldly existence; not others who only talk of it at second hand.

Meaning today and context

Talking about spiritual ideas is not the same as living them. What matters is the quiet inner work, not how well we can explain it.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says only those who, absorbed, merge the outer world, the senses, mind and ego into the conscious Self are free; not those who only talk about it at second hand.
