Vivekachudamani 1.360

1.360 Guru to Disciple

atīva sūkṣmaṃ paramātmatattvaṃ | na sthūladṛṣṭyā pratipattumarhati | samādhinātyantasusūkṣmavṛttyā | jñātavyamāryairatiśuddhabuddhibhiḥ ||

The truth of the supreme Self is extremely subtle; it cannot be grasped by gross vision. It is to be known by the noble, whose minds are very pure, through samadhi, by an exceedingly subtle state of mind.

Not everything worth knowing can be seen with a busy, coarse attention. The deepest things ask for a quiet, refined mind.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says the supreme Self is extremely subtle and cannot be grasped by gross sight; it is known by noble seekers of very pure mind through the subtlest attention in samadhi.
