Vivekachudamani 1.366

1.366 Guru to Disciple

ataḥ samādhatsva yatendriyaḥ san | nirantaraṃ śāntamanāḥ pratīci | vidhvaṃsaya dhvāntamanādyavidyayā | kṛtaṃ sadekatvavilokanena ||

Therefore, with senses restrained and mind at peace, be absorbed constantly in the inner Self, and destroy the darkness made by beginningless ignorance through seeing the oneness of the real.

Deep meditation is best learned under a qualified teacher; if it brings up distressing experiences, or you live with trauma or severe depression, seek guidance and support (Tele-MANAS 14416). It is not a substitute for treatment.

Meaning today and context

The instruction is simple though not easy: quiet the senses, calm the mind, turn attention inward, and keep at it.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he urges the disciple: with senses controlled and mind at peace, be constantly absorbed in the inner Self and destroy the darkness of beginningless ignorance by seeing the oneness of being.
