Vivekachudamani 1.368

1.368 Guru to Disciple

ekāntasthitirindriyoparamaṇe heturdamaścetasaḥ | saṃrodhe karaṇaṃ śamena vilayaṃ yāyādahaṃvāsanā | tenānandarasānubhūtiracalā brāhmī sadā yoginaḥ | tasmāccittanirodha eva satataṃ kāryaḥ prayatno muneḥ ||

Living in solitude is the cause of the senses' withdrawal; self-control is the means to restrain the mind; through calm the tendencies of the ego dissolve; from that the yogi always has a steady experience of the bliss of Brahman. Therefore the sage should always strive to still the mind.

Meaning today and context

Peace is built in steps: fewer inputs quiet the senses, restraint steadies the mind, and a calmer mind loosens the grip of ego. Each step makes the next easier.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he explains the chain: solitude stills the senses, control stills the mind, calm dissolves the ego's tendencies, and from that comes unbroken bliss; so the sage should always work to still the mind.
