Vivekachudamani 1.374

1.374 Guru to Disciple

vairāgyabodhau puruṣasya pakṣivat | pakṣau vijānīhi vicakṣaṇa tvam | vimuktisaudhāgralatādhirohaṇaṃ | tābhyāṃ vinā nānyatareṇa sidhyati ||

Know, O wise one, that dispassion and knowledge are a person's two wings, like a bird's. Without both, climbing to the creeper on the top of the mansion of liberation cannot be done with either one alone.

Meaning today and context

Understanding without letting go stays theoretical; letting go without understanding becomes harsh or empty. Growth needs both wings.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he says dispassion and knowledge are like the two wings of a bird; without both one cannot climb to the top of the mansion of liberation.
