Vivekachudamani 1.375

1.375 Guru to Disciple

atyantavairāgyavataḥ samādhiḥ | samāhitasyaiva dṛḍhaprabodhaḥ | prabuddhatattvasya hi bandhamuktiḥ | muktātmano nityasukhānubhūtiḥ ||

For one of intense dispassion there is samadhi; for one in samadhi alone, firm realisation; for one who has realised the truth, release from bondage; and for the freed self, the experience of eternal happiness.

Meaning today and context

Lasting happiness is the end of a chain that starts with honestly loosening our grip on what cannot satisfy. Each link supports the next.

The guru continues teaching the disciple in the Vivekachudamani (attributed to Shankaracharya): he gives the sequence: intense dispassion leads to samadhi, samadhi to firm realisation, realisation to release from bondage, and release to the experience of lasting happiness.
