Vivekachudamani 1.387

1.387 Guru to Disciple

yatra bhrāntyā kalpitaṃ tadviveke | tattanmātraṃ naiva tasmādvibhinnam | bhrānternāśe bhāti dṛṣṭāhitattvaṃ | rajjustadvadviśvamātmasvarūpam ||

Whatever is imagined in something through error is, when examined, just that thing and nothing different from it. When the error ends, the reality of what was seen as a snake shines as the rope; so too the universe is of the nature of the Self.

Meaning today and context

Much of what frightens us is a rope taken for a snake. Looking clearly does not destroy the thing; it shows what it always was.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, explains with the rope and snake that what is imagined in error is nothing other than its ground; so the world is the Self.
