Vivekachudamani 1.391

1.391 Guru to Disciple

sadevedaṃ sarvaṃ jagadavagataṃ vāṅmanasayoḥ | sato'nyannāstyeva prakṛtiparasīmni sthitavataḥ | pṛthakkiṃ mṛtsnāyāḥ kalaśaghaṭakumbhādyavagataṃ | vadatyeṣa bhrāntastvamahamiti māyāmadirayā ||

This whole world, known through speech and mind, is Being alone; for one who stands at the far limit beyond nature, nothing exists apart from Being. Are pot, jar and pitcher known as anything separate from clay? It is the deluded one, drunk on the wine of māyā, who says 'you' and 'I'.

Meaning today and context

Many quarrels come from treating 'me' and 'you' as walls. Seeing the shared ground beneath different shapes can soften the sharp divisions we live by.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, says the whole world is Being alone, as pots are only clay, and that 'you' and 'I' are spoken by one drunk on māyā.
