Vivekachudamani 1.413

1.413 Guru to Disciple

chāyeva puṃsaḥ paridṛśyamāna- | mābhāsarūpeṇa phalānubhūtyā | śarīramārācchavavannirastaṃ | punarna saṃdhatta idaṃ mahātmā ||

This body, seen like a person's shadow, as a mere reflection, through the experience of the results of past action: once cast far off like a corpse, the great soul does not take it up again.

The verse speaks of the body as impure to loosen identification with it, not to teach self-contempt. Never offer it to someone with an eating disorder, self-harm or low self-worth; care for your body. If you are struggling, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Your shadow moves with you, but you don't mistake it for yourself. The wise relate to the body in that way: it is there and used, but it is not who they are.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, says the great soul, having cast off identification with the body like a corpse, does not take it up again.
