Vivekachudamani 1.416

1.416 Guru to Disciple

prārabdhasūtragrathitaṃ śarīraṃ | prayātu vā tiṣṭhatu goriva srak | na tatpunaḥ paśyati tattvavettā- | 'nandātmani brahmaṇi līnavṛttiḥ ||

The body is strung on the thread of past karma already in motion. Let it go or let it stay, like a garland on a cow; the knower of truth, whose mind is absorbed in Brahman, the Self of bliss, does not look to it again.

Not detaching from the body is not neglecting it: eat, rest and take medical care. The verse is about not being ruled by the body, not about giving up food or treatment. If you feel like harming yourself, call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

A cow does not fret over the garland around its neck. The wise live in the body without anxiety over how long it will last; that is freedom from the fear of death, not carelessness about life.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, says the knower of truth does not look back at the body, held by the thread of prārabdha karma, whether it lasts or falls, like a cow unaware of a garland on it.
