Vivekachudamani 1.422

1.422 Guru to Disciple

vidyāphalaṃ syādasato nivṛttiḥ | pravṛttirajñānaphalaṃ tadīkṣitam | tajjñājñayoryanmṛgatṛṣṇikādau | nocedvidāṃ dṛṣṭaphalaṃ kimasmāt ||

The fruit of knowledge should be turning away from the unreal; turning toward it is the fruit of ignorance. This is seen in how the knower and the ignorant behave before a mirage and the like. Otherwise, what visible fruit would the wise gain from it?

Meaning today and context

Someone who knows the shimmer on the road is a mirage does not run for water. Real understanding changes behaviour; if it doesn't, it isn't yet understanding.

The guru, continuing his teaching to the disciple, says knowledge shows in turning away from the unreal, as the knower does not run after a mirage while the ignorant does.
