Vivekachudamani 1.438

1.438 Guru to Disciple

dehendriyeṣvahaṃbhāva idaṃbhāvastadanyake | yasya no bhavataḥ kvāpi sa jīvanmukta iṣyate ||

He in whom the sense of 'I' in the body and senses, and the sense of 'this' in everything else, never arises anywhere: he is held to be liberated while living.

This is a non-dual teaching about identity. It is not a reason to neglect the body, health, family, work or medical treatment.

Meaning today and context

Much of our suffering comes from identifying with the body's state and treating the rest of the world as separate objects to grab or fear. Loosening both is the work here.

The guru: the liberated one never takes body and senses as 'I', nor other things as 'this' (separate and his).
