Vivekachudamani 1.453

1.453 Guru to Disciple

prārabdhaṃ balavattaraṃ khalu vidāṃ bhogena tasya kṣayaḥ | samyagjñānahutāśanena vilayaḥ prāksaṃcitāgāminām | brahmātmaikyamavekṣya tanmayatayā ye sarvadā saṃsthitāḥ | teṣāṃ tattritayaṃ nahi kvacidapi brahmaiva te nirguṇam ||

Prārabdha is indeed very strong for the knowers; it ends only by being lived through. Stored and future karma are destroyed in the fire of right knowledge. But for those who, seeing the oneness of Brahman and Self, always abide absorbed in it, none of the three exists anywhere: they are the attributeless Brahman itself.

Meaning today and context

Some of what happens to us must simply be lived through; some can be released by changed understanding. Knowing which is which saves a great deal of struggle.

The guru summarises the three kinds of karma: prārabdha is spent by experiencing it; stored and future karma are burnt by knowledge; and for those fully established in Brahman, none of the three exists.
