Vivekachudamani 1.474

1.474 Guru to Disciple

svasyāvidyābandhasaṃbandhamokṣāt | satyajñānānandarūpātmalabdhau | śāstraṃ yuktirdeśikoktiḥ pramāṇaṃ | cāntaḥsiddhā svānubhūtiḥ pramāṇam ||

In freeing oneself from bondage to one's own ignorance, and in realising the Self whose nature is truth, knowledge and bliss, scripture, reasoning and the teacher's words are the means of knowledge; and one's own experience, established within, is also a means of knowledge.

Meaning today and context

Learn from texts, think it through, listen to a good teacher, and then test it in your own experience. All four matter; none alone is enough.

The guru names the means of knowing one's freedom: scripture, reasoning and the teacher's word are proof, and inner self-experience is proof too.
