nārāyaṇo'haṃ narakāntako'haṃ | purāntako'haṃ puruṣo'hamīśaḥ | akhaṇḍabodho'hamaśeṣasākṣī | nirīśvaro'haṃ nirahaṃ ca nirmamaḥ ||
I am Narayana, the slayer of Naraka; I am the destroyer of the three cities (Shiva); I am the Person, the Lord. I am unbroken awareness, the witness of all; I have no lord over me, and I am without 'I' and without 'mine'.
This verse is about dropping the ego, not inflating it. Anyone who uses 'I am God' to demand worship, obedience or money is misusing it.

The striking point is the last line: this 'I' that is everything has no ego and no sense of 'mine'. It is not self-inflation but the dropping of the small self, which is what makes such a claim possible.
The disciple identifies himself with the forms of God (Narayana, Shiva) and with the witness of all, free of 'I' and 'mine'.
