Vivekachudamani 1.542

1.542 Guru to Disciple

kvacinmūḍho vidvānkvacidapi mahārājavibhavaḥ | kvacidbhrāntaḥ saumyaḥ kvacidajagarācārakalitaḥ | kvacitpātrībhūtaḥ kvacidavamataḥ kvāpyaviditaḥ | caratyevaṃ prājñaḥ satataparamānandasukhitaḥ ||

Sometimes he seems a fool, sometimes a sage, sometimes he has a king's splendour; sometimes he seems lost, sometimes gentle; sometimes he lies still like a python, taking what comes; sometimes he is honoured, sometimes scorned, sometimes unknown. So the wise one moves about, ever happy in supreme bliss.

Meaning today and context

Praise, insult, fame and obscurity come and go. When our sense of worth does not depend on how we are seen, we can pass through all of them at peace.

The guru describes how the knower may appear in many ways while staying inwardly blissful.
