Vivekachudamani 1.556

1.556 Guru to Disciple

yatra kvāpi viśīrṇaṃ satparṇamiva tarorvapuḥ patatāt | brahmībhūtasya yateḥ prāgeva taccidagninā dagdham ||

Wherever the body of the ascetic who has become Brahman may fall, withered like a leaf from a tree, it was already burnt by the fire of consciousness.

This verse is about the realised sage's freedom from the body, not an invitation to die or to disregard life. If you are thinking about death or harming yourself, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

For one who knows the Self, death is no longer a fearful event, because the identification with the body has already ended.

The guru says it does not matter where the realised ascetic's body falls.
