1.559 Guru to Disciple

kulyāyāmatha nadyāṃ vā śivakṣetre'pi catvare | parṇaṃ patati cettena taroḥ kiṃ nu śubhāśubham ||

If a leaf falls into a ditch, a river, a holy place of Shiva or a crossroads, what good or harm is that to the tree?

This verse is about the realised sage's freedom from the body, not an invitation to die or to disregard life. If you are thinking about death or harming yourself, please call Tele-MANAS 14416.

Meaning today and context

Outer circumstances around the end of the body do not touch the Self, just as a fallen leaf does not change the tree.

The guru gives the image of a falling leaf to show the place of death does not matter to the knower.
