patrasya puṣpasya phalasya nāśavad- | dehendriyaprāṇadhiyāṃ vināśaḥ | naivātmanaḥ svasya sadātmakasyā- | nandākṛtervṛkṣavadasti caiṣaḥ ||
Like the perishing of leaf, flower and fruit is the perishing of body, senses, breath and mind. Not so the Self, one's own, which is Being itself and of the nature of bliss; it remains, like the tree.
If you are grieving, your loss and your sorrow are real; this verse speaks of what endures and does not ask you to stop mourning.

Ageing and loss take away many things we thought were us. The verse invites us to find what remains through all those changes.
The guru says only body, senses, breath and mind perish, never the Self, like leaves falling from a tree that stands.
