Vivekachudamani 1.571

1.571 Guru to Disciple

bandhañca mokṣañca mṛṣaiva mūḍhā | buddherguṇaṃ vastuni kalpayanti | dṛgāvṛtiṃ meghakṛtāṃ yathā ravau | yato'dvayāsaṅgacidetadakṣaram ||

The deluded falsely imagine bondage and liberation, which are qualities of the intellect, in the Reality, just as the covering of sight by a cloud is imagined to be in the sun. For this imperishable is non-dual, unattached consciousness.

This is a statement of non-dual truth, not a reason to stop practising, caring for oneself or others, or seeking help and treatment when needed.

Meaning today and context

When a cloud hides the sun, the sun is not darkened; our view is. Similarly, feelings of being stuck belong to the mind, not to the awareness behind it.

The guru says the deluded project bondage and liberation, which belong to the mind, onto Reality.
