Vivekachudamani 1.580

1.580 Shankaracharya

saṃsārādhvani tāpabhānukiraṇaprodbhūtadāhavyathā- | khinnānāṃ jalakāṅkṣayā marubhuvi bhrāntyā paribhrāmyatām | atyāsannasudhāmbudhiṃ sukhakaraṃ brahmādvayaṃ darśayaty | eṣā śaṃkarabhāratī vijayate nirvāṇasaṃdāyinī ||

For those on the road of worldly life, worn out by the burning pain from the rays of the sun of suffering, wandering in the desert, deluded, longing for water, this speech of Shankara reveals the very near ocean of nectar, the blissful non-dual Brahman. May it triumph, this giver of liberation.

Like chasing a mirage, we often look for relief far away when what we need is very near. The verse ends with hope: peace is closer than we think.

The closing verse (attributed to Shankaracharya) praises the work itself as water for travellers in the desert of samsara.
