Vivekachudamani 1.7

1.7 Shankaracharya

amṛtatvasya nāśāsti vittenetyeva hi śrutiḥ | bravīti karmaṇo mukterahetutvaṃ sphuṭaṃ yataḥ ||

'There is no hope of immortality through wealth': so says scripture, and it clearly declares that action is not the cause of liberation.

Meaning today and context

Money can buy comfort but not freedom from fear and sorrow. However much we gain or do, the deepest peace comes from understanding, not acquisition.

The author cites scripture: wealth cannot buy immortality, so action is not the cause of liberation.
