Vivekachudamani 1.99

1.99 Guru to Disciple

kartrādibhāvaṃ pratipadya rājate | yatra svayaṃ bhāti hyayaṃ parātmā | dhīmātrakopādhiraśeṣasākṣī | na lipyate tatkṛtakarmaleśaiḥ | yasmādasaṅgastata eva karmabhiḥ | na lipyate kiṃcidupādhinā kṛtaiḥ ||

There the intellect takes on the role of doer and the rest and appears so, while this supreme Self shines by itself, with the intellect alone as its adjunct, the witness of all, untouched by the least trace of the actions done by it. Because it is unattached, it is not touched at all by the actions done by its adjunct.

Meaning today and context

Even when the mind is busy acting, scheming and suffering, there is a part of you that only watches. Knowing that awareness is untouched can bring steadiness when the mind is in turmoil.

The guru continues on the dream state: the intellect plays doer, while the Self shines in it as an untouched witness.
