Vidura Niti 1.30

1.30 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

aśrutaśca samunnaddho daridraśca mahāmanāḥ | arthāṃścākarmaṇā prepsurmūḍha ityucyate budhaiḥ ||

"One who is unlearned yet puffed up, poor yet full of grand ambitions, and who wants wealth without work: the wise call him a fool."

This criticises arrogance and wanting wealth without effort, not poverty or high hopes. Never use it to mock someone who is poor or ambitious.

Meaning today and context

Arrogance without learning, plans without means, and wanting money without effort are the classic recipe for disappointment. Big dreams are fine when matched with work.

Vidura now turns from the wise to the fool (mudha), beginning with three marks.
