Vidura Niti 1.49

1.49 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dvāvimau grasate bhūmiḥ sarpo bilaśayāniva | rājānaṃ cāviroddhāraṃ brāhmaṇaṃ cāpravāsinam ||

"The earth swallows these two, as a snake swallows creatures that live in holes: a king who does not resist his enemies, and a brahmin who does not go out into the world."

'Brahmin' and 'king' here name roles (the learner-teacher and the protector), not birth or caste. Resisting enemies is a ruler's lawful duty, never a licence for personal violence.

Meaning today and context

Those who hide from the core demand of their role, whether a leader who never stands up for his people or a learner who never leaves his comfort zone, slowly fade away.

Vidura begins sayings built on 'two': the earth swallows those who fail their basic role.
