Vidura Niti 1.68

1.68 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

arakṣitāraṃ rājānaṃ bhāryāṃ cāpriyavādinīm | grāmakāmaṃ ca gopālaṃ vanakāmaṃ ca nāpitam ||

a king who does not protect, a wife who speaks unkindly, a cowherd who wants to live in the village, and a barber who wants to live in the forest.

The line on wives reflects the outlook of its time; it must never be used to demean a wife or justify abandoning a partner. Harsh speech in a relationship is a two-way matter to work on together. If you face abuse, seek help (women's helpline 181, police 112).

Meaning today and context

The examples are of people unsuited to their role: a protector who does not protect, a cowherd who will not go to the pastures, a barber who will not stay where his customers are. The point is to see whether someone fits the role they hold.

Vidura completes the list of six to be abandoned like a leaking boat.
