samairvivāhaṃ kurute na hīnaiḥ samaiḥ sakhyaṃ vyavahāraṃ kathāśca | guṇairviśiṣṭāṃśca purodadhāti vipaścitastasya nayāḥ sunītāḥ ||
He marries among equals, not among inferiors; he keeps friendship, dealings and conversation with equals; and he puts forward those distinguished by merit. The policies of such a wise man are well guided.
'Equals' should be read as compatibility of values and mutual respect, not caste, class, wealth or status. It must never be used to exclude anyone or oppose a marriage on those grounds.
