Vidura Niti 5.14

5.14 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sulabhāḥ puruṣā rājansatataṃ priyavādinaḥ | apriyasya tu pathyasya vaktā śrotā ca durlabhaḥ ||

Men who always speak pleasing words are easy to find, O king; but one who speaks what is unpleasant yet beneficial, and one who listens to it, are hard to find.

Meaning today and context

Anyone can tell us what we want to hear. A friend or colleague who tells us the hard truth for our good is rare, and so is the humility to hear it. Value both.

Vidura tells Dhritarashtra, who dislikes hearing unwelcome truths, that flatterers are common but honest advisers and willing listeners are rare.
