One who tries to instruct someone who will not be taught, one who flies into anger, one who serves an enemy beyond all limit, one who does not protect the women of his household (may good be yours), one who asks for what should not be asked, and one who boasts.
'Protecting women' reflects its time, when women were placed under men's guardianship. Today read it as caring for the safety of one's family; it is never a licence to control or confine any woman.

Vidura begins listing the seventeen: the first six are those who teach the unteachable, get angry, serve an enemy too much, fail to protect the women of the house, ask what should not be asked, and boast.
