5.35 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

utpādya putrānanṛṇāṃśca kṛtvā vṛttiṃ ca tebhyo'nuvidhāya kāṃ cit | sthāne kumārīḥ pratipādya sarvā araṇyasaṃstho munivadbubhūṣet ||

Having raised sons, freed them from debt and arranged some livelihood for them, and having married all his daughters into fitting homes, one should seek to live in the forest like a sage.

Not advice to abandon family. The focus on sons' livelihood and marrying off daughters reflects its time; today daughters and sons alike deserve education and independence.

Meaning today and context

Responsibilities to children come first; only when they are settled and independent is it time to step back and turn inward. Retirement is earned by finishing one's duties, not by escaping them.

Vidura describes what a father should do before retiring from worldly life.
