Vidura Niti 5.38

5.38 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

paśya doṣānpāṇḍavairvigrahe tvaṃ yatra vyatherannapi devāḥ saśakrāḥ | putrairvairaṃ nityamudvignavāso yaśaḥpraṇāśo dviṣatāṃ ca harṣaḥ ||

See the evils of conflict with the Pandavas, before whom even the gods with Indra would falter: enmity with your own sons, a life of constant anxiety, the ruin of your fame, and the delight of your enemies.

Meaning today and context

Family feuds have hidden costs: constant tension, lost reputation and the quiet satisfaction of those who wish you ill. Count them before choosing conflict.

Vidura returns to his main plea, setting out the costs of war with the Pandavas.
