Vidura Niti 5.41

5.41 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

dhārtarāṣṭrā vanaṃ rājanvyāghrāḥ pāṇḍusutā matāḥ | mā vanaṃ chindhi savyāghraṃ mā vyāghrānnīnaśo vanāt ||

Dhritarashtra's sons are the forest, O king, and the sons of Pandu are held to be its tigers. Do not cut down the forest with its tigers, and do not drive the tigers from the forest.

Meaning today and context

In a family or team, different members play different roles. Driving out the strong ones or destroying the shared home harms everyone.

Vidura uses the image of a forest and its tigers to show Dhritarashtra that his sons and the Pandavas need each other.
