Vidura Niti 6.13

6.13 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

adbhyo'gnirbrahmataḥ kṣatramaśmano lohamutthitam | teṣāṃ sarvatragaṃ tejaḥ svāsu yoniṣu śāmyati ||

Fire arose from water, the kshatriya from the brahmin, iron from stone. Their power, which reaches everywhere, is quenched in their own sources.

The mention of brahmin and kshatriya reflects the social order of its time; it is not a basis for birth-based hierarchy or caste.

Meaning today and context

However powerful we become, we should be gentle toward those and that from which we came: parents, teachers, the people who raised us up. Using our strength against our own roots ends badly.

Vidura uses images from nature to say that power, however great, grows quiet before its own source.
