A gift given grudgingly, out of fear or with an eye on the cost, is felt by the one receiving it. Good people quietly decline such hospitality; generosity has to be real to be received.
Vidura continues on hospitality: a household whose offerings a learned guest refuses because of the host's greed, fear or stinginess is a household that has failed.
