Vidura Niti 7.1

7.1 Dhritarashtra to Vidura

anīśvaro'yaṃ puruṣo bhavābhave sūtraprotā dārumayīva yoṣā | dhātrā tu diṣṭasya vaśe kilāyaṃ tasmādvada tvaṃ śravaṇe dhṛto'ham ||

A man is not the master of his own rise and fall; like a wooden doll strung on threads, he is held in the power of what the Ordainer has fixed. So speak on; I am intent on listening.

Meaning today and context

Saying 'it is all fate' can be honest humility, but it can also be a way to avoid a decision we already know we should make. Dhritarashtra blames destiny while he still holds the power to act.

Dhritarashtra, still troubled, tells Vidura that a person is not master of his own rise and fall but moves like a puppet on strings, and asks him to go on speaking.
