Vidura Niti 7.2

7.2 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

aprāptakālaṃ vacanaṃ bṛhaspatirapi bruvan | labhate buddhyavajñānamavamānaṃ ca bhārata ||

Even Brihaspati, if he speaks words out of season, earns contempt for his intelligence and dishonour, Bharata.

Meaning today and context

Good advice at the wrong moment is not heard, and can make even a wise person look foolish. Timing is part of wisdom: wait until the listener can receive what you have to say.

Vidura begins his reply: even the wisest speaker is despised if he speaks at the wrong time.
