7.49 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

ārjavena naraṃ yuktamārjavātsavyapatrapam | aśaktimantaṃ manyanto dharṣayanti kubuddhayaḥ ||

A man who is straightforward, and modest because of his straightforwardness, the foolish take to be powerless and so they attack him.

Meaning today and context

Honest, gentle people are often mistaken for pushovers. Keep your honesty, but learn to set firm boundaries so that kindness is not read as weakness.

Vidura observes that the foolish mistake an honest, modest person for a weak one and try to push him around.
