Vidura Niti 7.51

7.51 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

agnihotraphalā vedāḥ śīlavṛttaphalaṃ śrutam | ratiputraphalā dārā dattabhuktaphalaṃ dhanam ||

The Vedas bear fruit in the fire offering; learning bears fruit in character and conduct; a wife bears fruit in love and children; wealth bears fruit in being given and enjoyed.

This verse reflects the social views of its time about women. It must never be used to demean, control or exclude anyone. A marriage is not measured by having children, and wealth guidance here is not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Everything has a purpose that completes it. Learning is wasted if it does not improve character; money is wasted if it is only hoarded, never shared or used well.

Vidura names the true fruit of four things: Vedas, learning, marriage and wealth.
