Vidura Niti 7.56

7.56 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

aṣṭau tānyavrataghnāni āpo mūlaṃ phalaṃ payaḥ | havirbrāhmaṇakāmyā ca gurorvacanamauṣadham ||

These eight do not break a vow: water, roots, fruit, milk, ghee, what is taken at a Brahmin's wish, a teacher's command, and medicine.

This is traditional ritual guidance, not dietary or medical advice. Never stop prescribed medicine for a fast; consult your doctor if you have a health condition.

Meaning today and context

Religious discipline was never meant to be rigid to the point of harm. Medicine, simple nourishment and a guide's instruction are allowed even during a fast.

Vidura lists eight things that do not break a religious vow or fast.
