Vidura Niti 7.57

7.57 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

na tatparasya saṃdadhyātpratikūlaṃ yadātmanaḥ | saṃgraheṇaiṣa dharmaḥ syātkāmādanyaḥ pravartate ||

One should not do to another what is disagreeable to oneself. This, in brief, is dharma; any other conduct springs from desire.

Meaning today and context

The simplest test of right action: would I accept this if it were done to me? Much wrongdoing comes from forgetting that others feel as we do.

Vidura gives the essence of dharma: do not do to others what you would not want done to yourself.
