Vidura Niti 7.64

7.64 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

anāmnāyamalā vedā brāhmaṇasyāvrataṃ malam | kautūhalamalā sādhvī vipravāsamalāḥ striyaḥ ||

Non-recitation is the stain of the Vedas; lack of vows is the stain of a Brahmin; idle curiosity is the stain of a virtuous woman; long absence from home is the stain of women.

This verse reflects the social views of its time about women. It must never be used to demean, control or exclude anyone. The reference to Brahmins is about personal discipline, not caste by birth.

Meaning today and context

What is not practised fades: knowledge unused is lost, and discipline neglected weakens. Keep up the practices that give your life its strength.

Vidura names what tarnishes various things: neglect of study, lapses in vows, idle curiosity and long separation.
