Vidura Niti 7.68

7.68 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

sahasriṇo'pi jīvanti jīvanti śatinastathā | dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ vimuñcecchāṃ na kathaṃ cinna jīvyate ||

Those with a thousand live, and those with a hundred live too. Dhritarashtra, give up craving; there is no way one does not live.

This speaks to craving, not to real poverty or hardship. If you are struggling to meet basic needs, seek help; this is not financial advice.

Meaning today and context

Life goes on with more or with less. Much of our anxiety about money comes from craving more, not from real need; letting go of that craving is freeing.

Vidura urges Dhritarashtra to give up craving, pointing out that people live on a thousand or on a hundred.
