nityodakī nityayajñopavītī nityasvādhyāyī patitānnavarjī | ṛtaṃ bruvangurave karma kurvanna brāhmaṇaścyavate brahmalokāt ||
A brahmin who daily performs his water rites, always wears the sacred thread, studies every day, avoids the food of the fallen, speaks truth, and does his teacher's work, does not fall from the world of Brahman.
The varṇa verses describe roles as understood in their time. Read them as duties grounded in qualities and conduct, never in birth; they must never be used to rank people, assign anyone a station or worth, or exclude anyone. 'Food of the fallen' is not a rule about whom to eat with.
