Vidura Niti 8.6

8.6 Vidura to Dhritarashtra

nāgnistṛpyati kāṣṭhānāṃ nāpagānāṃ mahodadhiḥ | nāntakaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ na puṃsāṃ vāmalocanā ||

Fire is never sated with wood, nor the great ocean with rivers, nor Death with all beings, nor men with fair-eyed women.

The last line speaks from a man's point of view of its time and treats women as objects of desire. It is about the man's craving, and must never be used to blame, objectify or control women.

Meaning today and context

Desire fed is desire grown. Some hungers are never filled by more of the same; they have to be seen and restrained.

Vidura gives four images of things that are never satisfied, to show that craving has no natural end.
