Victorious is Hara, the lamp of knowledge in the house of the yogis' minds: his crest shines with the lovely sliver of the moon worn as a diadem; he burned wavering Desire in play, like a moth; he glows at the tip of the wick of the highest good, and drives out the vast, heavy darkness of delusion that rumbles within.

The book opens by naming its aim: an inner light strong enough to burn up craving and clear confusion. Whatever form one prays to, the hope is the same: that understanding, not desire, should lead.
Opening invocation of the Vairagya Shataka: Bhartrihari salutes Shiva (Hara) as the lamp of knowledge that burns away desire and dispels the darkness of delusion in the hearts of yogis.
