Sense-objects will surely go, even after staying with us a long time. In the parting, what is the difference, that people do not give them up themselves? When they leave of their own accord, they cause the mind boundless anguish; when we give them up ourselves, they bring endless joy of calm.
Meaning today and context
Everything we hold, jobs, possessions, roles, youth, will leave sooner or later. Letting go willingly, before it is taken, turns loss into freedom.
Bhartrihari's argument for letting go: sense-objects will leave us anyway; the only difference is whether we let them go freely or they are torn away.
